Spring Summit 2020

3/5/2020

UPDATE AS OF MARCH 16:
Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, KSEC will be canceling this event. You can read our full statement and learn about the alternative plan and find mutual aid resources here.

_________

The Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition's annual Spring Summit is coming to Southwestern Kentucky this year. Register today to secure your spot and get all the information you'll need to attend!

Register here!

The Spring Summit is a chance to come together with fellow student activists from across the state to learn about the environmental issues that Kentucky faces and how we can organize our campuses to influence legislation and create effective change. Join us for a weekend of building grassroots power through workshops, trainings, planning for the coming year, good food and good company.

Picture
A Save The Date image. A green moon rises behind cartoon green trees. It says: Register today for the Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition's 2020 Annual Spring Summit. April 3-5, Bowling Green, Ky, bit.ly/KSECEvents.

Who: KSEC members, allies, and alum. The space will be led by young people, both student and nonstudent, aged 15-30.
What: A 3-day Summit with workshops, social time, and community building.
When: April 3-5, 2020. We usually convene Friday evening and break Sunday afternoon, with optional programming before/after.
Where: Bowling Green, Kentucky. We'll be staying together in an AirBnB and have a venue for daytime workshops in the city.
Why: To build strong resilient community in the face of climate change and injustice. To learn from each other how we can protect and empower our communities. To plug into organizing across the state. To process our feelings about climate change and imagine a radically just future.

Accessibility Statement: KSEC does everything in our power to make our events as safe and accessible as possible. All of our venues will be ADA accessible and climate controlled. Whenever possible we offer gender neutral bathrooms and metal frame, armless chairs. For the latest information about our venue, please check in with us directly.

We can help set up a carpool, offer a small scholarship, and provide food and housing. We don't turn anyone away for a lack of funds. We also encourage participants to take care of themselves and provide alternative spaces for folks who need time to rest and decompress. If you have additional needs, please reach out and we'll do our best to meet them.

This year we'll be in Bowling Green, Kentucky! BG is a really fun city, super close to Mammoth Cave, the location of Western Kentucky University, with so many things to do and a rich history of movement struggle. We're being hosted by the rad folks there who are KSEC members, students at WKU, and members of BG's Sunrise Hub.

Our theme is Transforming Climate Grief. We're going to have some of the same trainings as the 2019 Fall Summit, but they'll be more polished. We're going to talk about how we feel about the possible impending climate apocalypse, what to do about those feelings, and what to do about the climate.

We'll learn about anti-oppression, radical imagination, indigenization, and more! We're also going to be intentional about making open space during the day and evening for people to bond and have emergent conversations.

We want everyone to leave feeling connected and plugged in, and ready to go to work. We'll give people an opportunity to learn more about KSEC and how they can join our programs.

Also, we're working on something special! It looks like we're going to try to have a non-violent direct action training. There may be additional optional programming, before or after the event, such as a Mammoth Cave hike. Stay tuned for more info!

Everyone who registers will receive a logistics packet with detailed information about the weekend, and will have opportunities to donate to help the summit happen. Follow us on social media @KSECoalition for updates.

If you have questions or concerns, reach out to Caci Gibson at 1-606-231-6803 or cacigibson94 at gmail.com or via the Contact form on our website.
