Local Food Working Group
This working group is a place for young Kentuckians who want to help promote local food and sustainable food economies in Kentucky!
What Are We Excited About?
Final analysis: we’d like to figure out what’s already being done around the state , what is already known vs what research is needed, and sort of map the landscape of the food movement in KY in order to find our niche. Below are some ideas that have come up:
What Are We Excited About?
Final analysis: we’d like to figure out what’s already being done around the state , what is already known vs what research is needed, and sort of map the landscape of the food movement in KY in order to find our niche. Below are some ideas that have come up:
- Using university purchasing power to help build the local food economy, especially with smaller farmers that have trouble getting “in” anywhere - farmers markets etc.
- Helping farmers out
- Creating a network between farmers and businesses (esp local restaurants) and using that network to create a more dispersed purchasing model to help small farmers
- Helping new and small farmers find land
- Addressing political aspects of lack of access to farmers markets and the difficulties with starting out as a small and ethical farmer
- Challenging factory farming
